I don't think I've ever even seen a documentary short film.

Okay, first off, I'm a little disappointed that I haven't seen many of the films nominated this year
yet, unlike last year when I saw three of the five films nominated for Best Picture(There Will Be Blood,
No Country For Old Men and Juno). I did see a little of Michael Clayton but George Clooney is just not my
cup of tea. As I'm sure everyone who has read my blog more then a couple times knows that I've been
following Milk pretty obsessively since pre-production and despite that I still haven't seen the film.
A few of the reasons being, getting to the theater isn't the easiest task in the world with my family,
it's about a gay politician, basicly meaning I'm the only one in my family who wants to see it,
and it's rated R. So obviously my parents are going to assume there is probably gay sex
everywhere and people doing drugs off each other and swearing and other "bad stuff" and that Milk
couldn't possibly be rated R for the simple fact that Harvey Milk was shot five times, including
twice in the head at close range. Basicly, it's been a battle to get my parents to let me and take me to
see it, but I haven't given up yet. Anyway. I'm so happy to see that Milk got so many nominations,
especially for Sean Penn and Josh Brolin. I figured Sean Penn would be nominated but you never really
know after seeing Sean Penn getting snubbed so many times. But Josh Brolin was kind of a surprise, a very
nice surprise. I hear his performance is chilling. As much as I would like to root for both of them
I really want Heath Ledger to win. As I wrote in my little review for The Dark Knight on this blog
Heath Ledger's performance was frightening, enthralling. He blows everyone else out of the water. But
my stance on Sean Penn is still the same, if he doesn't win you will hear from me. Now I do have a few
quick questions and comments before I end this post.
    1. Why in the world is Bolt nominated? I will be shocked if WALL-E does not win. I'm kind of surprised it
    wasn't nominated for Best Picture.
    2. I just want to send a little FUCK YOU to the academy for completely ignoring Revolutionary Road.
    3. Where is The Dark Knight's nomination for Best Picture and Aaron Eckhart's nomination for Best supporting Actor?
    4. I wish Anne Hathaway and Kate Winslet could both win.
    5. Yay Danny Elfman! I know you're not going to win but I don't care!
And a couple quick shout outs. Where are the nominations for Sally Hawkins, Leonardo Dicaprio, David Cross,
Ralph Fiennes, and Bruce Springsten for his song "The Wrestler"? I think there are a few more I'm forgetting
but you know who you are!
In the end these nominations don't surprise me. I'm both pleased and pissed off, just like last year.
    So what do you think?
What is your opinion on the nominations? Who are you rooting for? Or did they forgot someone?

Definitely glad Slumdog Millionaire got a nod. While I doubt they'll win I hope this gets more people to view the movie. As for animated flick; when you only have a few animated films each year the pickings are slim. They should just give pixar an oscar every year.

I completely didn't realize, while reading this over, that Revolutionary Road didn't get any nominations. I thought it was pretty good... although the ending felt rushed and it completely missed the entire point of the story (In my opinion, anyway). I thought the critics would enjoy that movie too, but apparently it didn't go over well.

I think, according to the Academy's standards and their varied tastes, we should be lucky Ledger is even getting nominated for a supporting role. Editing and all that was expected for the film too, but The Dark Knight wasn't a film meant to grab the Academy's attention in the way films like Slumdog Millionaire or Doubt did. Personally I'm unimpressed with a lot of the movies that have come out this season. I'm surprised that there aren't any noms given to Gran Torino. Considering how much the Academy loves Eastwood, I'm surprised he isn't up for director and the movie isn't up for best picture.
I think Mickey Rourke is going to take the award for the Wrestler. It's said to be his best performance of his career. And I see Hoffman winning for Best Supporting since he's a favorite too. I do hope Kate Winslet wins for the Reader. It was such a lovely story. I think the actor who played the main role should have gotten some attention too, but ah well.
I've never seen that movie or read White Oleander. How was it? I'm going to guess it's a good thing to be compared to her =)

Oh he definitely inspires thoughts not meant for the classroom.... =p I wouldn't have had the gall to put, "I'm interested in older men," but if I would have thought of it that day I would have definitely put, "I'm single." I'm looking forward to the six hours of class I have with him each week haha! And I plan on sitting in the front from now on haha

I thought Kate and Leo did a great job. Leo nailed the role, in my opinion, but I've heard the critics weren't too fond of the movie. I haven't heard too many people praising it either. It's a shame, the previews made it look so fantastic. I think the ending really threw off people. No one really understood it. And it really didn't make sense within the context of the movie and with relation to the book.

I thought Penn was great, but I'll have to see the Wrestler to really give an opinion on it. Even though I loved Milk, it was the subject that gave me chills, not so much the acting. Although Penn never fails. With Ledger, it's wishful thinking but I still have a feeling it'll be hard for him to win. I always believed that, even after the movie came out, but then again the handful of movies released and nominated this year aren't too impressive or pulling a lot of people's interests. Compared to last year, I don't think this year is too hot. I'm going to root for Michael Shannon, I think. He did do a good job in Revolutionary Road.

did you actually watch all of these movies? cause if you didn't then how do you know that the movie that you picked is better then the one you didn't see?

He teaches oceanography and marine biology. He's pretty good looking. I'm excited for class tomorrow! And I have to talk to him after class too. haha, I'm such a dork.
In the movie Leo's character, Frank, is seen running down the street after his wife dies. Then the scene cuts to him watching his kids play at the park while a neighbor talks about "the accident." In the book, though, it emphasizes how Frank went from trying to be someone who stood out from the dull crowd of the 50s to someone whom he had spent so many years mocking and trying to get away from. That's what I took from the book anyway, and it was really disappointing to see that missing from the movie.
I think I may try to go see the Wrestler sometime soon. I heard it's wonderful.
